MS4B Gearbox water in oil

HELP !!!! just been down to put new stern gland packing in starboard shaft . Checked gearbox oil appears to have water in it ??? This gear box was replaced in 2008 new . Port Gearbox old MS3C no problem . Always replaced anti freeze . Being as spares are non existent could it be run uncooled ??? .

Hi,

Gearboxes are raw water cooled , presumably your antifreeze is in the freshwater circuit, not tried to run one without cooling but I guess it would overheat. you could try Coastal Rides for a replacement cooler element or there are a few gearboxes that crop up on Ebay

Many thanks geotechnic had a problem when last out stbd engine water temp went over 220 degrees run power down temp dropped poss expanded g/box cooler !!!! .

P.S looked at replacing gearboxes with new but seems a lot of trouble ZF 45A or ZF 63A.
