repowering Canadian 29 Mirage

Post by dwh » Wed Sep 08, 2004 12:08 am

Hello all: I'm the owner of Osprey, a 29 Mirage built in Canada in 1978, in which I cruise the wilds of Georgian Bay in the Great Lakes. I've had the boat six years, and am now looking at the options for repowering. What few 29s were built here in Canada in the late 70s seem to have a single I/0. Mine has the original Ford 351 V-8 with an OMC 800 drive. The drive has had some rebuilding over the years. Coastal cruising hereabouts (narrow buoyed channels, lots of granite reefs) means I'm perfectly happy running at 8-10knots, occasionally planing, but not often. I'm looking now at the possibility of starting with a clean sheet of paper with the powerplant, possibily a Merc 4.3 litre with fuel injection and a Bravo III counter-rotating drive. Converting to diesel just looks too expensive. I'd welcome any thoughts from other 29 owners (most of whom appear to be "overseas") on repowering.
Love the boat. Perfect for wilderness cruising.
